I was born and raised in a very rural, agricultural environment. I now live on the Roseland peninsula in Cornwall and outdoor activities are still large parts of my life. Some years ago, I stopped doing architecture as a full-time job and it was natural that I started to make knives in a more professional way.
The knives that I make are all handmade in the classical style using as much natural material as possible. Forging the blade is not only a lot of fun but it also allows me to construct more irregular blade shapes and to recycle steel. But I have to admit, the more I forge my blades the more I love to do plain classical blacksmithing and hence the other objects that I sell in my online shop.
From my smithy in Cornwall at the Roseland peninsula I run knife making workshops for individuals and small groups. There are a few knife types that one can make, depending on which aspect of knife making you want to learn. These courses run for one to two days, during which I will instruct and assist in forging, shaping and finishing a knife.
Further courses for making leather sheaths or leather pouches for penknives are also available.
All my knives are handmade. Some I forge to shape from scrap spring steel from vehicles’ suspension springs, EN45, 1095 and 20N15, as well as recycled steel from chainsaw chains, motorcycle chains, cables and old handsaws to forge Damascus (pattern welded steel). For my full tang knives I use proprietary steel like O1 and O7 to build knives using the stock removal method. I do all my knife heat treatment in the differential heat treatment style and I check the RC hardness of every blade that I make using a special set of hardness test files that give a good degree of accuracy. Apart from that, now and then I take a blade and abuse it shamelessly as quality control. Not all my knives have the same RC and it depends on what the knife is intended for. If you need a particular RC rate for your knife please contact me.
If you don’t find what you like in the shop or you want a special touch adding to the knife, I accept one-off commissions for bespoke knives, so you can have precisely the one that you want.
In my blog you will find tutorials, tips and tricks about all aspects of knife making. Now and then I post new tutorials and if you find them interesting you can subscribe to my blog.
In my spare time, amongst other things, I update my old blog, www.thedyslexicraftsman.com where I publish recipes and other non-knife making articles, such as Arts & Craft related subjects.
